What it does
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that supports the bladder, uterus and rectum, contributes to urinary and anal closure, and coordinates with breathing, abdominal activity and movement. Pregnancy, birth, menopause, surgery, pain and exercise can all affect function.
Symptoms that may justify assessment
Urine or bowel leakage, vaginal heaviness or bulging, emptying difficulty, pelvic pain, discomfort during sex, postpartum changes or exercise limitation may relate to pelvic-floor dysfunction. The same symptom can arise from different mechanisms.
What functional assessment may include
Symptoms, breathing, posture, ability to contract and relax, endurance, coordination, scars and response to load may be reviewed. Any examination is explained in advance and performed with consent.

How it may be treated
A plan may include education, muscle training, relaxation, breathing coordination, biofeedback, habit changes, pressure management and graded load. More contractions are not automatically better; pain or overactivity may require a different approach.
